This intensive course, divided over two days, will provide a unique opportunity to familiarize yourself with the modern and contemporary art of South Asia – predominantly that of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
Our timeline will be focused on the mid-20th century until present day, with the first day covering the modern and the second day the contemporary. The sessions – which will include lectures, readings, video material, and a recommended reading list – will be fast-paced with a focus on select artists, seminal artworks and historical movements which have defined the art from the region. In addition to this, we will be discussing the role of several important institutions, museums and collections that have helped shape the dialogue over the years. We will also be examining the presence of South Asian arts in the UAE, providing key context to your own location.
By the end of the intensive, you will be able to navigate through South Asian art with more confidence, allowing you to understand the historical background and current practices. It will provide you with the tools to plan your own study into more specialized locations and fields within this incredible rich and diverse region.
