Course Description

This course introduces you to careful consideration of the socio-historical realities, movements, and key artists that have substantially influenced artistic production on an international scale. From the invention of photography at the beginning of the 1800s to the revolutionary late paintings of Turner, from the crisis of the institution of classical art, to the challenging aesthetics of cubism, ready-mades, Bauhaus, abstract expressionism, and pop art, the module will address the contemporary panorama of art through a solid historical framework.

Particular emphasis will be placed on theoretical and critical issues as defined by the emergence of artistic media including performance, photography, installation, video, multimedia, and digital art and their relation to previous ideas, concepts, and media.
