Course Description

So many movements, so many paintings, so many museums — art history is as long and varied as human life itself. So where to begin studying art? This course will provide a foundation in art history. During an intensive week, through lectures, debates, documentaries and exercises, we will delve into the revolutionary moments that have shaped Western art history. From cave paintings to concept art, Art History: Revolutionary Moments will guide you through history and provide you with the essentials to experience art to its full extent. There have been several dramatic moments where the idea of art was dramatically redefined, for instance when religious images were forbidden or perspective was invented. Moving from one spectacular change to another, the most important painters, principal art movements and essential techniques will all be addressed. At the end of the course you will have a solid understanding of the various forces that shape art and plenty of new insights for your next museum visit.
