Course Description
This art history course aims to survey the history of Western art from the earliest examples to the mid 19th century in a selective way. Within each period, the most significant artists, as well as exemplary works of art and architecture will be highlighted. Apart from the survey of the different featured forms and styles, a particular emphasis is going to be placed on the historical and social background of various art epochs, to present the cultural contextualization of remarkable works. Moreover, to establish the continuity and “afterlife” of styles and periods, during each lecture a series of significant artworks will also be explained in connection with later pieces as inspired by the previous generation, or that refer to earlier years, thus showing the fascinating cross-references in the intertwined history of arts.
